Accidental marks are so much a part of my practice. I guess it's kind of cheating, but there's still a lot of decision making going on, deciding which accidents are worth keeping and which not. When you're in the flow, that's all art is really: making a mark, deciding if it's what you like and making another mark. One of the great things about hand printmaking is that you get a few minutes while you clean up a colour to make your decision- it's built into the process.
Thoughts you might like to see the layers building up on a piece in progress. These are the first three passes at a hand monoprint on tissue paper. I've let it dry between each photograph. Paint has been applied to the printing surface (a piece of plastic in this case) in a variety of ways- 'drawing' into the back of the paper, smearing paint on like a painter would, and subtle rolled blends of colour.
'Who's teaching Who?' is the subject of my latest newsletter, out today, in which I contemplate coming out of home schooling, 'the whole world is medicine', starting teaching workshops again, low-tech tools for printing at home, new arty book reviews, dates for the diary, work in progress and new work. Phew!
Been working on the last few of this 'edition' of drypoints- for 'edition' read 'each one totally different'! I hope to get the last few unique pieces into my Etsy shop in the next few days. The rest are already on there and are £85 each, unframed, float mounted onto card.
'Who's learning from who?' is the subject of my newsletter coming out this week, where I'll be talking about slowly returning to leading workshops and artist's continuing professional development, amongst other things. If you want to be on the list- sign up via my website, or direct link in bio.
Is Instagram slowly giving me square eyes? This is another of my newest finished pieces, but as you can see it's quite 'cinemascope' so doesn't fit so well into the ig format ( if I want to show detail anyway). I've been edging towards making square pieces recently- does that mean ig is seeping into my subconscious?

If you have a good day in the studio, does that mean the next one has to be not so good? Or perhaps it's just that it's worse in comparison. Had a lovely morning yesterday -totally in the flow- from which this image derives.

More new work- I'm having great fun with these room mock up apps- really gives you an idea how the piece will look on the wall.
